General Instructions

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain.

Step 1

Really, the easiest way to cut those center pieces is to just wing it :) Lay out the frame, and then lay the longest single cross piece over until centered on corners and mark. Cut ends to points as shown above with a circular saw following your marks. Then cut your two remaining cross brace pieces in the same manner.

Step 2

Now lay out the fence slats and measure and cut your 1x4s to fit. Nail on with 1 1/4″ nails and glue.

Step 3

Add remaining sides with 1 1/4″ finish nails and glue.

TIP: Pocket hole jig users may wish to build frame first with 3/4″ PHs and 1 1/4″ PH screws.

Step 4

Attach cross bracing with 1 1/4″ finish nails and glue.

Barn door done deal!

Step 5

Now let’s move to the wall. Attach top board at the top height of your barn door, level. Attach lower board 36″ from top board top edge to bottom board bottom edge. You must securely attach to studs in walls with screws. This is very important.

Step 6

Now this trim will finish off the non sliding end of the frame. You could also add to bottom and top, and you could attach additional trim to the sliding end of the door to completely trim out.

Step 7

To save money, layer drawer slides as shown in Step 7 picture above.

Step 8

Then attach slides to barn door and hang … you’ll probably need to do some adjusting to get things just right.

Finishing Instructions:

Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth. It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.
